ACTORS ON CAMERA
Level One - Introduction To Acting & Auditioning For Camera -- (STARTS OCTOBER 22, 2009)

This class introduces you to on-camera acting & auditioning while using popular and award-winning scripts.

Curriculum includes: film acting, TV series acting, intro to Drama, intro to Comedy, monologues, two-person scenes and more.

You will learn:

  • A detailed approach to on-camera acting
  • How to build a character and shape an audition scene
  • The value of using “eye lines” to give action and definition to a scene
  • Audition techniques while using actual TV series and film scripts
  • How to work with a “reader” as it is done in the professional audition
  • The importance of stillness and of the natural voice aided by watching weekly video playback

You will receive:

  • A new script each week to memorize and perform the following week
  • A video with of all of your scenes to take home

ACTORS ON CAMERA 
Level Two - Acting & Auditioning For Camera -- (STARTS WINTER, 2010)

This class allows you to hone your acting & auditioning skills for the camera while using popular and award-winning scripts. This is where you will achieve the constant flow of practice needed to master the rudiments of on-camera acting. Access the confidence and creativity that only comes with constant practice.

You will learn:

  • How to interpret a script and build a character
  • How to take and use direction
  • How to create detailed ‘character arcs’
  • How to create opposites
  • How to find the ‘event’ and identify what you are fighting for
  • How to create a character’s history
  • How to find humour in a script
  • How to ‘bookend’ your performance with an ‘arc of emotions’
  • How to let a character’s intentions come through your eyes, face and voice 
  • How to make powerful and unanticipated choices
  • How to dramatically improve memorization skills
  • How to create complex characters under time restraints
  • How to polish comedic and dramatic monologues
  • How to excel in ‘ensemble’ (group) auditions
  • How to do a ‘cold read’ with only 10 minutes or less to prepare lines

Each week you will receive a new Film or Television script one day later, until the final week when you will receive your script the day before class. In this class you will prepare for the reality and pace of the professional on-camera audition.

You will also receive:

  • A video with of all of your scenes to take home, use with an agent or compile a demo reel

ACTORS ON CAMERA

Dynamic Scen
e Study Class -- (STARTS WINTER, 2010)

Discover the nuances of acting on camera with a partner. Use scripts from popular and award winning films and television shows. This workshop is ideal for the intermediate to advanced level student.

You will learn :

  • How your physicality changes on camera with another person as opposed to the solo camera audition
  • Differences in acting styles while shooting a close-up, medium or master (long) shot
  • How to hit your mark, cheat to camera, eyelines on set (vs. in audition)
  • How to react, listen, think and be while on camera
  • How to create dynamic characters, when to be understated
  • How to use your voice effectively
  • New characters and scripts every week
  • Industry know-how (updates on shopping for an agent/getting work on your own)

For those of you who have expressed an interest in doing level 2 this Spring, I will allow students to choose scene-work with a partner (level 3), or continued practice of audition scripts (level 2) with an off-camera reader.  Please let me know your preference.

Students take home a video copy of their work every week.  Congratulations to all my past students who are working!

Julia Paton
(Instructor) is a professional actor, voice artist and teacher with numerous feature film, television and commercial credits to her name. Julia has taught on-camera acting for over 16 years.  She is the creator and founder of Actors On Camera, and its corporate division Crunch Time Coaching.  Corporate clients include TD Bank and Manulife Financial. Julia has also taught on faculty at The National Institute of Broadcasting, TVS (on-camera acting for teens and adults) and at CTS (Children’s Television Studio). Julia was also selected to teach at The Keon International Film Academy in Mumbai, India alongside a prestigious faculty comprised of top instructors from Los Angeles, New York and Toronto.
